You’ve probably already gotten the text. The one in the group chat that says “who did you use for senior pics?” And then fourteen names come back and you have no idea which one is right, because they all have pretty photos and none of them tell you what the day is actually going to feel like.
So let me tell you.
I’m a senior portrait photographer in Danville, CA, and I only photograph high school seniors. Not newborns, not weddings, not family sessions at the park. Just girls in the biggest year of their life so far. Here’s exactly how it goes when you book with me, start to finish.

Before I ever pick up a camera, you’re coming to see me.
The styling closet consult is the first real thing we do together. I have a physical closet here. Racks of curated clothing, shoes, jewelry, the accessories that make an outfit actually look finished instead of almost finished. Your daughter comes in, we pull, we try things on, we build her looks together.
This part exists because of the single most common sentence I hear from a 17 year old girl: “I have nothing to wear.”
She doesn’t have nothing to wear. She has a closet full of clothes she’s worried are wrong. There’s a difference, and it’s my job to solve it before session day so she’s not standing in her bedroom at midnight the night before spiraling about it.
I was a hair colorist before I was a photographer. I spent years standing behind a chair figuring out what someone actually needed to feel like themselves. That’s the same skill, just applied to a different rack. I’m the only one in this area doing this, and it’s the part clients bring up first.
“My daughter absolutely loved having access to Shawna’s styling closet.”

You are not driving her to a salon at 7am and then across town to meet me. Professional hair and makeup are built into the experience. I coordinate all of it for you with an artist from my talented team of trusted professionals so you can take one more thing off of your plate.
This matters more than it sounds like it does. There’s a moment, and it happens every single time, where a girl looks in the mirror after her hair and makeup are done and she goes quiet for a second. That’s the moment the whole day turns. She hasn’t even been photographed yet and something already shifted.
One mom described it better than I ever have: “Her studio is the portal, and the moment you step through those doors, you’re transformed into the best version of yourself.”

By the time we’re shooting, we already know each other. She’s already tried on her outfits. She already knows what we’re doing.
We shoot in the studio, we shoot outside, we move through the looks we built together. I direct constantly. Nobody gets left standing there wondering what to do with their hands. I’ll tell you exactly where to put your chin, what to do with your shoulder, when to stop smiling and just breathe.
And I talk the entire time. If something looks incredible, you’re going to hear about it in real time. That’s not a technique, that’s just what happens when I’m watching a girl figure out mid-session that she can actually do this.
“I feel like professional model during every photoshoot.”

Almost every girl says it. In the consult, in the car, in the DM her mom sends me before booking. “Just so you know, she’s really awkward in photos.”
She’s not. She’s scared. Those are not the same thing.
She’s scared of being seen trying and having it not work, because that would confirm the story she’s already telling herself. So she gets ahead of it. She says she’s awkward first so nobody else has to.
My whole job is that. Not the lighting, not the location. Getting her comfortable enough to forget she’s being looked at, and then handing her the proof of what happened when she did. I turn “I’m so awkward” into the highlight of senior year, and I have receipts on that one.
“The HIGHLIGHT of my entire senior year.”

Some families want more than one afternoon, and that’s what the Model Team is.
It’s a year long program. Multiple shoots across the whole senior season, a group of girls who become genuinely close, and a final senior session at the end when she’s completely comfortable in front of a camera. Nobody else within twenty miles of Danville offers anything like this.
The thing parents tell me about the Model Team is never about the photos.
“Watching her confidence grow with each session was incredible.”
“All the girls are supportive, inclusive, genuine.”
That last one matters. Junior and senior year can be brutal socially. This is not that.

You come back and we go through the gallery together. I help you narrow it down, because you’re going to need help.
Then we talk about what these actually become. Albums, wall art, canvas, metal, framed prints, custom grad cards. Real things that live in your house, not a folder of files that ends up buried on a laptop.
I’m going to be straight with you about why I care about this. In eighteen months she’s going to be gone. The photo on the wall is the last part of the confidence work, because she has to walk past it every day and see the version of herself that she once swore didn’t exist.
“As I prepare to send my daughter off to college, I’m so grateful.”
“I don’t even know how we will pick which ones to use, every single one is stunning.”
If you’re looking for a senior portrait photographer in Danville, CA and you want the day to be more than a nice set of pictures, start with the closet consult. It’s the lowest pressure way to find out if this is right for your girl. Come see the closet, pull some things, meet me, and decide from there.
And if you’re the senior reading this over your mom’s shoulder right now, already deciding you’re going to be bad at this: I promise you’re not. Come find out.
